Uruguay's state power company - UTE improves air safety for local aviators
UTE, Uruguay’s state-owned power company generates, transmits and distributes electricity throughout the country. In an effort to adhere to their commitment to pollution prevention and sustainable development, the company is currently wind-mapping the region for the future installation of wind generation farms.
Wind-mapping towers fitted with anemometers are located at the dam spillway of Rincón del Bonete (Corner Dam Bonnet) and around the country. The towers are extremely tall structures that may have posed an air safety risk. But with the recent installation of solar obstruction lights fitted to the towers, that risk has been reduced and now local aviators are safely alerted to the possible dangers in the Black River region.
Due to the lack of mains electricity supply to zones where the towers are installed, Avlite’s solar obstruction lighting was the perfect solution. Being environmentally sustainable, extremely energy efficient and highly visible, once installed, the lights require no operator intervention, resulting in safety risk reduction, and low on-going maintenance costs - important factors to consider for very tall structures.
Designed to be maintenance free with a service life of 12 years the solar obstruction lights clearly identify tall structures, are self contained and easy to install. Cost effective and eco-friendly the energy efficient LEDs used in all of Avlite’s solar lighting, have a long working life of up to 100,000 hours and due to the light’s solar power, there are no power cables interfering with the tower’s performance.
“UTE have been purchasing Avlite products since 2007 for their superior solar-powered capability, reliability, low on-going maintenance and operation costs and ease of installation,” commented Daniel Alayon, Quartz Sistemas - Uruguay.
UTE plans on installing Avlite’s solar obstruction lights on other wind-mapping towers across the territory to enable the future installation of wind generation farms.
