Avlite Systems Deliver Solar Airfield Lighting System to Mongolia
Avlite System’s solar powered runway lighting system will be installed in the Gobi Desert in Mongolia to support medivac operations at Oyut airport. Avlite distributor, Mongolian aviation consulting firm ACH SVS LLC, worked closely with their customer, Oyu Tolgoi LLC, to provide a cost effective and eco friendly airfield lighting system to suit their application. Oyu Tolgoi LLC ia one of the largest Mongolian mining companies in operation today.
Mongolia has a very extreme climate with very hot summers reaching up to 40°C and very cold winters dropping as low as -50 °C. Due to Mongolia’s extreme ranges of temperature, of key importance in the choice of Avlite’s lighting system was its ability to operate in a diverse range of temperatures.
Other factors for the choice of Avlite Systems solar powered runway system were the significant up front and long term environmental, economic and maintenance savings. Using pollution-free energy from the sun to power the lights offered the airfield an eco-friendly lighting solution without the need to lay costly cabling.
The lighting system consists of AV425-RF and AV70-RF radio controlled solar aviation lights in conjunction with an Apollo-155 beacon. The AV425-RF lights will be used as runway edge, threshold, runway caution, simple approach and obstruction lights while the AV70-RF lights will provide taxiway lighting. The Apollo-155 will be used as a rotating beacon for airport identification.
The revolutionary AV425-RF has non-precision IFR and VFR capability with both visible and near infrared lighting outputs. The airfield lights can be controlled anywhere in the airfield by handheld radio controller, in the air traffic control tower or from the aircraft via VHF receiver with virtually unlimited range using an encrypted repeating mesh network known as AvMesh™. The proprietary AvMesh™ network enables each light to transmit and receive commands, allowing the airfield to be expanded or altered at any time.
