Grantley Adams International Airport Goes Green with Avlite Solar Taxiway Lights

The decision to upgrade the taxiway edge lighting system at Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) in early 2009 has resulted in safer operations, increased visibility for pilots, reduced maintenance costs and a lower carbon footprint for the prized international airport of Barbados.

GAIA is a recognized international tourist destination, making its commitment to reducing energy consumption, investing in renewable technology solutions and reducing its environmental footprint an important operating goal for the Caribbean leader.

“The lights [AV70s] are working great.  They are a significant improvement to our current taxiway lighting system providing bright, clear maintenance free lighting.  The tower, pilots, ground crew and operations staff are pleased with their operation during the first 6 months”

- Morland Williams, Mechanical Engineer, GAIA

To date, pilots have commented that the Avlite AV70 taxiway lights are extremely bright allowing for precise taxi and maneuvering operations during low visibility conditions.  A replaceable battery in the solar taxiway lights and additional obstruction lights, which have also been ordered and installed, allows GAIA to recycle batteries after their projected 3-5 years of maintenance free operation.

Avlite Systems & partner Aviation Renewables Corp. salutes Grantley Adams International Airport for it's commitment of safer, more efficient, less costly aviation lighting solutions.
