Alice Springs Airport Goes Solar
Alice Springs Airport have recently installed a series of Avlite Solar LED Airfield Lights.
Alice Springs is located in central Australia and is the main entry point to some of Australia’s world famous landmarks including Ayres Rock, Kings Canyon and the MacDonnell Ranges. In addition to numerous commercial flights, the airport is also utilised by the US Air Force as a freight transfer base for military cargo planes taking equipment in and out of the nearby Pine Gap Joint Military site. Experiencing over +40°C temperatures, Alice Springs Airport is also used by Boeing as a test centre for hot weather trials relating to new aircraft.
As part of their evaluation, Alice Springs airport performed successful in-field jet blast testing on the AV70 lights and in September 2008 AV70 solar threshold, taxiway & runway edge lights were installed utilizing Avlite’s 5kg rubber tile for secure installation.
The lights will operate maintenance-free for years; saving Alice Springs Airport thousands of dollars in electricity and maintenance costs.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) operate out of Hanger 123, providing aero-medical assistance and health services to remote communities around Alice Springs. Many remote airstrips used by the RFDS around Australia rely on Avlite’s reliable solar airfield lights.
Avlite’s products are designed to withstand extreme hot & cold climates, and are used extensively in the Middle East and Australian outback.
The completely portable solar LED lights require no wiring between each unit or to mains power, and can be installed in minutes operating maintenance free for up to 5 years. The integrated solar panels charge the internal battery during daylight hour and on dusk, once the ambient light threshold drops, the lights will turn on automatically.
We would like to thank the team from Alice Springs Airport for their support and trusting Avlite Systems with their aviation lighting requirements.
