Avlite Systems Lights up Central Australia with Solar Airfield Lights
Hundreds of Avlite’s solar-powered LED airfield lights are now in service throughout Central Australia – some of the world’s most demanding regions.
Leading aerodrome maintenance & upgrade operators, APY Services, were contracted by the SA Government for the installations at remote airfields throughout the state.
The lights are being used and endorsed by the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, and provide emergency lighting to aid night-time medical evacuations for local indigenous communities.
An ultra-reliable, stand-alone emergency airfield light is critical for night-time emergencies.
The AV70 lens is designed and manufactured in Australia, and is the world’s only single piece lens built to incorporate two solar modules, with a positive divergence focal beam derived from ultra-high intensity LEDS.
It is also the only solar-powered emergency airfield light to be certified to a rating of IP68 for ingress protection. The digit ‘6’ in the IP68 rating means that the unit is completely dust-tight. The digit ‘8’ means that the unit is protected against complete, continuous submersion in water – critical elements to protect against sand-storms, runway flooding and extreme humidity.
To light the Amata Airstrip (pictured), APY Services selected the AV70 model light for emergency threshold, runway edge, and taxiway lighting, and the AVC310 model for airstrip corner markers. The higher-intensity corner markers aid in pilot identification of the airfield from distances greater than 3000mtrs. The AVC310 models were also installed to provide pilots with an immediate airstrip orientation when viewed from directly above.
